Virginia Carol Turton Bynum

10/20/1944 – 6/17/2026

Carol was born during WWII to John and Ruth Turton in avalley community between a hill and the Ohio river on the Kentucky side. (Paradise Bottom). Farming was normal, one phone in the valley was at her grandparents’ home. Electricity has not arrived yet. Word from war injuries or deaths was received by telegrams delivered by the mailman. Trips to the grocery store were once a week, if then. Ration stamps were used to purchase sugar and flour. Most families had a storage or cellar where vegetables and fruits were canned during season and stored for winter. Chickens for eggs and fried chicken on Sunday was normal Cows needed milking twice a day. From the Milk, babies had something to make them grow and butter was made from the cream. Nothing was wasted.

Blue River Island Baptist Church was about halfway down the valley. One room church with outhouses outside. Preachers came from the Seminary in Louisville when they were available. People came from the hills and valley to worship. They supported each other. Harvest time, they borrow equipment from one another.

After Carol’s father came home from the war, they moved to the Turton farm. In the meantime, Carol’s position of only Child and Grandchild was taken away by the arrival of sister’s and cousins. She never let us forget that she was the first.

In the late 50’s a big move to Florida was needed as Carol’s father was driving large trucks and worked for a company in Georgia and then Florida. What a change for everyone, we had running water, bathroom in house and schools we could walk to. Carol was an excellent student and went to a High School that offered Latin and classes that opened her eyes to what the world had to offer. She graduated from high school with scholarships. From there she went to Brewton Parker in Georgia and Barry College in Rome Georgia.

After college she accepted a position with Haggai Institute in Atlanta. As part of the evangelistic team Carol went to Europe and other locations. Carol was a great friend and stay in touch with people from the colleges and the Haggai team. At the First Baptist Church of Atlanta was involved with singles ladies (trips ) choir and other activities.

After Carol’s Mother had a health issue, she decided to come back to Florida to be closer to family. Once more was very much involved in Plymouth Baptist Church. Created skits and other activities. For a short time, she moved to Texas from there and visited many of the states in the west. Made more friends.

Carol came back to Florida and moved to Tallahassee. Then Monticello and then Lee. In all locations was involved in churches. In Monticello Carol was involved with a theatre group. Carol and Her Mother sewed costumes for the cast and sometimes even filled in for small parts. Carol and David (husband) were involved in Lee with volunteer fire dept and election issues. They had dogs all the time.

Some of her hobbies were making picture books of all the photos taken. Sewing, crafts, and anything else that caught her attention.

Carol did not get married until in her 50’s but she was foster Mother to younger sister that passed away and left 2 very young girls. Other Nieces and Nephews knew that they could get her to take them to the movie, beach, etc. Will be missed by many.
