IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alfred James
Ellis
February 21, 1940 – December 17, 2025
Alfred was born to Edwin Ellis and Rebecca Allen (Cunningham) Ellis on February 21, 1940, in Mobile, Alabama. He was the second youngest of twelve children. Alfred was a direct descendant of Polette (Polee) and Rosa Allen who were among the Africans who were illegally transported aboard the schooner, the "Clotilda" in 1859/1860 to Plateau, Alabama. Alfred accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age and was baptized at Union Baptist Church in Plateau, Alabama.
Alfred served his country as a member of the United States Army and as a civilian in the United States Navy. After his military service, in 1975 Alfred received an Associates Degree in Applied Science from Newbury Junior College in Boston. Alfred graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Bostonwith a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Design Technology. Alfred had a 35 year
career with the Federal Aviation Administration in Nashua, New Hampshire as an engineer until his retirement.
In February 2001, Alfred and Cecelia were joined in marriage in Niagra Falls, New York. They lived in Boston and New Hampshire before relocating to Jasper, Florida in 2003.
Alfred joined African Baptist Church (ABC) in February 2007. He was
ordained as a Deacon in September 2018. Alfred enjoyed singing praises to God with the ABC Male Choir. He was an obedient servant, that when he saw something that needed to be done, he didn't report it, he would fix it himself without hesitation, without judgment and without expecting anything in return. Alfred made himself accessible to the church grounds and landscaping for more
than ten years. When Alfred recognized a food insufficiency in the church and community, Alfred approached the Pastor to see if this could be a ministry we could start. He implemented the Outreach Feed Program, where anyone could enter ABC for a hot meal. Dinner deliveries were also made to the sick and shut-in.
As an avid RV'er, every summer he had a favorite fishing spot in the
Bourne area of Cape Massachusetts, where he would catch porgies and bluefish. He enjoyed eating calamari at the local Lobster Pot and most of all the relaxation of being under the skies with his family. He also enjoyed deep sea fishing out of Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida with his son and friends. He was often referred to as a "Man's Man" (having qualities which made him popular among men) and
a "Man of his word" (means what he says and always kept his promises).
Alfred is preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Rebecca; his
brothers Everett, Caesar, Edwin Jr., Francis, Johnnie, Harold, Frederick and Sisters Edna, Theresa and Gwen.
Alfred is survived by his loving wife Cecelia of 25 years; two sons:
